Though gardening isn't exactly new or anything -- unless you consider 10,000 years to be recent -- it's kind of become the current trend. And just like acid-washed jorts and belly-bearing tops, not everyone can pull it off and have it work out. This is Florida: It's hotter than Hades, the soil is equivalent to that found in a desert, and our pests will most likely outlive the nuclear holocaust. All we can say is, good luck trying to jump on that bandwagon on your own; we're going to bet, just like your trendy flamingo shirt, you'll be over the whole gardening fad in the next month or two. However, for those who want to stay the course, help is out there. Karin Fields, also known as the Edible Gardening Gal, is teaching a monthly class on Gardening in the Tropics at 10 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month at Marando Farms. The course will explore topics ranging from garden location, soil, where to get seeds, which plants to pick, and more. A 15-year veteran of gardening in South Florida, Fields not only grows her own produce but installs home gardens for others, teaches numerous classes, and works with school outreach programs all across Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The class is free and open to the public. Marando Farms is located at 1401 SW First Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-294-2331, or visit
